Historical and artistic styles

Abstract Art:
Gucci Spring 2008 RTW collection was full of abstract patterns and motifs; The collection uses a very subjective visual language of form and color.

Futurism:
Hussein Chalayan designs are very influenced by Futurism art movement. We can see the speed, technology, movement, youth, power, etc. that Italian Futurist admired in the early 20th Century.

Minimalism:
Calvin Klein Spring 2008 collection is definitely inspired in minimalism. Clean minimal pieces with sober colors are close to the simple geometric structures and shapes that minimalism used back in 1963 as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism.

Surrealism:
Agatha Ruiz de la Prada showed a very surrealist collection at the Milan Fashion week 2009. The juxtaposition of unexpected elements in the garments take us back to the 1920s cultural movement.

Pop Art:
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is the perfect example for Pop Art influenced fashion, a 20th Century artistic movement where art became mass-produced… As we can see in these garments, the bright colors, the irony of popular images that we have seen in advertising before and the attitude that the clothes transmit are directly related with Pop Art.

Baroque:
These Baroque influenced garments from Gareth Pugh Spring 2009 RTW and Christian Lacroix Fall 2008 Couture shows the elaborated style from the 17th and 18th Centuries. Big collars, exaggerated shapes and contrasting colors transmit the mood of disambiguation of that era.
